As health care costs have skyrocketed over the past years, finding affordable, adequate health care coverage is more difficult than ever.  People, young and old, are unable to obtain preventative and critical medical treatment when they need it.  Lack of or inadequate health care coverage options in Maryland does not only hurt our citizens, it damages out economy as well.  Businesses suffer for choosing to provide health insurance for their employees, and in essence subsidize those businesses that choose not to provide coverage, by footing the bill as tax payers.  Consequently, YDM believes strongly that health care is a basic right, not a privilege and supports efforts to expand access and affordability for all Maryland citizens.

Who is uninsured?  Over 800,000 Marylanders have no health insurance.  Almost 90% of these individuals are employed or live in the household of someone who works.  These individuals do not receive health care through their place of work or are unable to obtain affordable health care.  Individuals without health insurance, in addition to not receiving stable health care, can face financial ruin with enormous medical bills and damaged credit.

The impact of the uninsured on Marylanders.  Marylanders with insurance face higher health care premiums and deductibles and decreasing benefits since those with insurance pay for the expensive emergency room care of the uninsured.  The high costs of health care for the frequently ill, disabled, and elderly are shouldered by taxpayers.  Ultimately, everyone benefits if everyone has health insurance.

Children are not receiving the care they need. Nearly 150,000 children living in Maryland do not have health insurance.  Of these children, 90,000 are eligible but not enrolled in public programs like SCHIP and Medicaid that would provide them with basic health care coverage.  In fact, providing health care coverage for children is cheaper than providing coverage for adults and would reduce long-term health care costs for tax payers.  YDM believes that as one of the wealthiest states in the nation, Maryland should provide basic health care coverage for its children to ensure their stable, healthy development.

Medicaid and Medicare matter YDM supports efforts to secure the strength and stability of Medicaid and Medicare, to ensure it is available for future generations.  These programs, built under the leadership of the Democratic Party, serve as a safety net for under-represented, disadvantaged, and vulnerable populations.  As the future leaders of Democratic Party, YDM strong believes that these programs must be constantly nurtured and reassessed to ensure its efficiency and long-term presence for those individuals that will one day require those programs.
